What Does Legacy Really Mean?

For me, to leave a legacy means to provide something that is enduring, useful and helpful to others, to nature, to the world and, in some way, to spirit — something that continues to have meaning long after I have left this physical body.

I see legacy as part of, or perhaps an aspect of, our life’s purpose.

I believe that our purpose in physical life is to learn, experience and develop as souls or spiritual beings. I also believe that we may have been given other responsibilities along the way: to enhance the physical world, to care for nature, and to assist other souls as they face their own challenges while here in physical form.

With these thoughts in mind, I am trying to do what I can to leave enduring gifts for my family while also contributing, in whatever small ways I can, towards a better future for nature, humanity and all that continues to exist here after I have gone.

Leaving Things Better Than We Found Them

When we visit a wild place and camp, there is a simple principle that most of us understand:

Take your rubbish home with you and leave the site as you found it — or, better still, leave it in a better condition than you found it.

I believe we could apply that same principle to our lives.

What if we each tried to leave the world a little better than we found it?

Given the condition of our planet and the consequences of what we humans have done, and continue to do, that may seem like an enormous challenge. Yet I don't believe it is impossible.

None of us can change everything. But perhaps we don't need to.

If enough individuals make better choices, care a little more deeply, share what they learn and encourage others to do the same, those individual actions can become something much greater.

As individuals linked by a common desire to create positive change, I believe we can make a difference. In fact, I hope that I will begin to see some of that positive change myself while I am still here in the physical world.

From Sustainability to Regeneration

I therefore intend to continue looking honestly at the way I live and to find ways of becoming more sustainable in as many areas of my life as possible.

But I also want to go beyond simply doing less harm.

Where I can, I want to explore ways of being regenerative — ways of giving something back, restoring rather than simply consuming, and helping to create conditions in which nature and people can flourish.

I know I won't get everything right. None of us will.

For me, this is not about achieving perfection. It is about continuing to learn, making better choices when I can, and sharing what I discover along the way.

A Legacy We Can Create Together

Perhaps the most meaningful legacy is not something one person creates alone.

By sharing my own endeavours, experiences and discoveries, perhaps I can encourage others to consider their own relationship with the world and the legacy they would like to leave behind.

And perhaps, together, we can create a worldwide community of co-creators — people who are willing to learn, experiment, share ideas and take positive action in their own lives.

If that happens, then what began as my own attempt to leave an enduring gift could become something much larger.

It could become a legacy that belongs not just to me, but to everyone who chooses to take part.

A legacy of care, sustainability, regeneration and positive change.

Something that continues to grow and create value long after any one of us has left this physical world.

And perhaps that is what legacy really means.
