1.0 Best Mediums For Oil Colour Painting
Keeping it Simple: The joy of oil painting lies in the rich, buttery texture of the paints and the versatility of the medium. When it comes to achieving your desired effects, the addition of painting mediums can be a game-changer. But with so many options out there, it can be tricky at first to know which one is best.
Fear not my friends! After careful consideration and much practice, I have determined that for most oil painting purposes, the top recommendation I can give is either no additional medium at all, or an alkyd medium to speed up drying time.
Painting with just the oil colours straight from the tube can result in a wonderfully lush, impasto finish. The oils will flow and blend beautifully on the canvas, allowing you to achieve rich, juicy strokes. This is a great option for those who love the buttery, traditional feel of oil paints.
On the other hand, adding an alkyd medium can be a real time-saver. Alkyds dry much faster than traditional oils, so you can build up layers more quickly and get to that final masterpiece in record time. The paint will retain its smooth, creamy texture while speeding up the drying process - perfect for plein air painters or those with limited studio time.
I have and still use “Liquin Original”, “Walnut Oil with Alkyd” and “Galkyd”. The latter two are slightly more fluid than Liquin Original. All can beused as an adative to speed drying time of your artwork and to thin the paint slightly for creating glazes.
So there you have it, oil painters. For the best results, stick to your pure oils or reach for an alkyd medium. Your paintings will thank you with their vibrant, long-lasting beauty. Happy painting!
