1.0 Glazing

This is a summary of the main article on my web page Glazing Part 1 For The full article go here:

Understanding Glazing Basics

At its core, glazing is the process of applying thin, transparent layers of paint over dry underlying layers. Think of it like adding delicate sheets of coloured glass over a painting, each layer subtly changing the colour and depth beneath.

Oil Painting Glazing: A Time-honoured Technique

For oil painters, glazing is a slow, meditative process:

Many people shy away from oil colour because they say it dries too slow and is messy. I personally find that oil colours are clean and easy to manage, they also dry overnight ready for another layer if I have used alkyd medium correctly.

  1. Start with a completely dry underpainting. (I often do this stage with acrylic paint but do not take it too far.)
  2. Choose a glazing medium like Liquin or Galkyd. For Liquin, start with a 1:1 ratio with paint; for Galkyd, try a 1:2 ratio of medium to paint.
  3. Select transparent or semi-transparent colours – avoid opaque paints that will obscure your underlying work.
  4. Mix your glaze to be incredibly thin – you should be able to see through it easily.
  5. Apply the glaze quickly and confidently with a soft, wide brush.
  6. Experiment with techniques like dabbing with a cloth or using a dry brush to create interesting textures.
  7. Allow each layer to dry completely – this will take 24-48 hours. (I find that it can be useful to work on two small to medium size paintings at a time)

Pro tip: It's always better to build up multiple thin layers rather than applying one thick layer. Patience is key in glazing!

2.0 Inspired Thoughts from beyond my norm!

Hello! The following transcript is a response to a question I posed after a short meditation and request to access the Akasha. I have shared it here as I think it may help others too.

My question was: How can I be more effective in bringing joy, peace and harmony into this world?

The response:

Take time to reflect and relax. Allow your thoughts to centre on positive beneficial things that you are already aware of. This act will enable you to create a positive frame of mind, mentally, physically and spiritually that you require. This will then enable you to align your thoughts to goodness.

Next select an area of thought or topic to consider further. Imagine this being a vehicle for change, the vehicle for enhancing peace, joy and harmony in this world. Consider how many ways it is helping, supporting and promoting the ideas and actions of peace, joy and harmony.

Next imagine integrating this idea, these thoughts and actions into your whole being. Imagine yourself filled, surrounded and bathed in the goodness that this idea brings with it.”

I then asked for an example.

Many people in a situation of crisis drop what they are doing and take steps to help those in need. These people move from the heart and are driven by the loving light.

We sometimes criticise the officials in office in times of crisis for acting too slowly or for simply being ineffective. We have to realise that it is easier for the individual to act from the heart than it is for the individual to act from the mind and put in place many actions logically arranged that are often restricted by the organisational structures we have developed.

If we accept and realise there are thousands if not millions of kind loving human beings ready to help in a crisis, we should be able to accept and understand that they are there all the time ready and waiting to give love and spread the eternal light.

Let us all consider that each day is a wondrous one, we should be joyful in the knowledge that we are not alone, we should ourselves be ready and willing to consider how we can help support our fellow men and women, the animals and plants on our world. We do not need to be in a crisis to act with goodness, each small act, as simple as a caring word will have positive effects. We can all do this in our everyday lives and the effect in the world will be exponential.”

I hope you found some of that helpful. So now it is your turn.

Take a few moments to relax, consider the small events in your life. Can you alter your interactions to make the moment and hence the day more joyful, peaceful and harmonious. Remember your actions result in a reaction. A positive action will invariable create a positive reaction.

Thank You.

Gift a smile each day and watch the world smile back!

3.0 Oil Painting Masterclass: Sc Fi and Fantasy by Patrick Jones

Oil Colour painting technique for layers, anatomical study and atmospheric effects.

PATRICK J. JONES is an award-winning sci-fi and fantasy artist and teacher. His work is collected and published worldwide, and his client list includes such companies as Disney, Lucasfilm and Roc books. Patrick grew up in the city of Belfast, Northern Ireland, during the worst years of the violent 30-year conflict known as "the Troubles". Influenced by artists Boris Vallejo and Frank Frazetta, he spent his days in the sanctuary of rooftops, drawing and dreaming of becoming a fantasy artist, to the din of street riots below. Patrick later spent two years in the merchant navy, after which he moved to London and worked as an illustrator for 15 years before travelling the world once more. Today, Patrick is settled in Brisbane, Australia, where he lives with his wife Cathy and their two scruffy dogs. When he's not painting he teaches art at two universities in the city.

Sci-fi and Fantasy – Oil Painting Masterclass

This detailed, user-friendly oil painting workbook is a companion to Patrick's Sci-Fi & Fantasy Oil Painting Techniques, and features previously unpublished artworks. Patrick leads us into his studio once again to explore further the art of layers, blending, and glazing with oil paints, while explaining step-by-step how these techniques can also be applied in digital art. With his ever-evolving use of technique, Patrick explores methods for painting various textures - from fabric and fur to gold and flesh - and demonstrates ways to work solvent free. The sheer scale and breadth of Patrick's experience, and the wealth of invaluable information he shares, means that no artist, art lover, or student should be without this volume on their bookshelves.
